Soft Leather Fishtail Collars for Whippets, Greyhounds & Lurchers

A fishtail collar is specially designed for sighthounds with narrow heads and long, delicate necks. A fishtail collar has a unique shape with a widening in the central section and narrower at the buckle. Fishtail collars are commonly thought of as a traditional greyhound collar.

It’s not recommended. Slim collars can cause injury due to the breed’s anatomy and prey drive.    Wide, padded collars distribute pressure safely. For extra security, especially for nervous or new rescues, consider a Martingale collar.

We recommend using a House or ID Collar (https://www.pointyfaces.co.uk/house-id-collars)for ID tags. Fishtail collars are designed for walks and sit higher on the neck, so a lightweight house collar worn at all times provides extra safety and peace of mind.

Use a soft tape measure around the top of your dog’s neck, where the collar will sit. Refer to the sizing chart in the product images to choose the right fit.   An XXL size is coming soon for larger Greyhounds.

Every dog is unique. Many Lurchers wear leather fishtail collars successfully. However, for dogs with high prey drive or anxiety, we recommend a Martingale Collar (https://www.pointyfaces.co.uk/martingale-collars)for additional safety. ​ This design tightens slightly if the dog pulls, helping prevent escape.

To ensure your leather collar lasts or many years, it deserves a bit of care. Here are some basic recommendations: 1. Drying If the collar gets wet, do not leave it to dry in direct sunlight or near a radiator. Fast drying can cause cracking. Instead, let it dry slowly at room temperature. 1. Conditioning the Leather Every few weeks (not just when it looks dry), apply a small amount of leather balm or conditioner (e.g., containing beeswax, lanolin, etc.). This nourishes and softens the leather, protecting it from drying out and cracking. Always apply to clean, dry leather.  1. Water Protection Leather is not 100% waterproof. Occasional wetness is fine, but frequent or prolonged exposure to water can damage the leather. If your dog loves swimming, we recommend removing the collar or using a nylon one for such activities and keeping the leather one for everyday wear. 1. Storage If you’re not using the collar for a longer time, store it in a dry, ventilated place. Ideally, hang it up or lay it flat to prevent bending or breaking.
