Are Whippets Hypoallergenic?

Whippets are often described as “clean” and low-maintenance, which makes them a popular choice for prospective dog owners. However, if you suffer from allergies, you might be wondering: Are Whippets hypoallergenic?
The short answer is no - Whippets are not considered hypoallergenic.
Like all dogs, Whippets produce dander, tiny flakes of skin that are one of the most common allergens for people with dog allergies. While their short, fine coats might make them seem like a low-shedding breed, they do shed and release both hair and dander into their surroundings.

That said, most people who suffer from allergies find Whippets more tolerable than other breeds. Why? They are generally clean dogs. They don’t have a strong doggy smell, they are not droolers, and their fine, short fur doesn’t tend to trap a lot of dust or dirt. Their grooming needs are simpler, which makes it easier to keep on top of the allergens they produce when compared to double-coated or long-haired breeds.
Tips For Reducing Dog Allergens At Home
Brush regularly using a gentle grooming mitt to reduce loose hair and dander
Keep soft furnishings clean, especially their favourite nap spots
Create dog-free zones, like your bedroom or office
Wash beddings, blankets and coats, especially during shedding season
Whippets aren’t hypoallergenic, but with the right routines in place, they can be a more tolerable breed for those with mild allergies.
