Q&A with DG DogGear: Designing Clothing for Italian Greyhounds

Updated: 5 days ago

In this Q&A, Renáta shares the story behind DG DogGear, her passion for Italian Greyhounds, and the dedication that goes into every coat, jumper, and pattern she creates. Her insight is invaluable for anyone who adores these elegant little dogs or wants to understand what makes a perfectly fitting sighthound coat.

1. What first inspired you to create DG DogGear?

The idea came about quite naturally. I became the proud owner of a little Whippet girl named Izy and soon realized that what was available for sighthounds simply didn’t meet my expectations for functionality, comfort, or design.

So I combined a practical need with my long-time dream of becoming a fashion designer. Sighthounds completely captivated me with their elegance and gentleness, and I gradually began creating my first patterns and sewing small collections.

That was the beginning of DG DogGear.

2. Italian Greyhounds are such a special breed. What makes designing for them unique for you?

Italian Greyhounds came into my life shortly after DG DogGear was founded, and they very quickly won both my heart and my professional attention.

Their delicate, elegant proportions require extraordinary precision — with these tiny bodies, every single centimeter matters. Designing for them has taught me patience, meticulousness, and a deep understanding of their anatomy. It’s the challenge of designing for them that has pushed me forward the most.

3. DG DogGear is known for exceptional quality and perfect fit. How do you achieve this?

Behind it are years of experience, continuous testing, refining, and improving.

Despite our growth, everything is still made by hand, exclusively in the Czech Republic, with great care, craftsmanship, and heart. Every product has its own maker, who is personally responsible for its quality.

We value fairness, towards our customers and towards the team that creates DG DogGear. And I believe this dedication is reflected in every model.

4. What has been your proudest moment running DG DogGear so far?

I started literally in a garage, just me and one seamstress. Today, DG DogGear is a professional and growing brand that thrives thanks to the trust of our customers.

But what I’m most proud of is every single moment when I receive a message saying that our clothing helped a sighthound feel warmer, more comfortable, or safer.

Every satisfied customer — both canine and human — is a huge motivation to keep going.

5. What advice would you give to new Italian Greyhound owners?

Italian Greyhounds have been part of my life since 2008. My first litter was born in 2013, and today I am surrounded by five of these gentle little personalities.

An Italian Greyhound is a wonderful combination of elegance, sensitivity, and surprising resilience. I would advise new owners to look at them realistically, they are not porcelain figurines, but they’re not little wild creatures either. They are delicately built, fast, and flexible, but certainly not made of sugar.

However, they are sensitive to cold, and high-quality clothing is truly essential in chilly or damp weather. Clothing should help the dog, not restrict movement or cause overheating indoors.

Italian Greyhounds need warmth, gentleness, stability, and closeness.

So to new owners, I recommend:

- providing them with quality clothing and a safe, comfortable environment

- raising them calmly and with a positive approach

- staying close to them and giving them a sense of security

Give them love and safety, and they will return it a thousand times over.

6. What’s next for DG DogGear?

We want to continue creating beautiful and functional pieces that genuinely serve sighthounds. We are preparing new models, exploring new materials and pattern techniques, and constantly looking for ways to improve our products even further.

Our main motivation remains the happiness and comfort of sighthounds and their owners — whether in the Czech Republic or anywhere else in the world.

I love Dg doggear. I buy this for my Italian greyhound. I have a Whippet who is five and a Whippet puppy of six months. My Italian greyhound who is 2 fits these beautifully. I have always been happy that they are from the Czech Republic as we visit there every year in February. We are going there again this February, although I have yet to find them in the pet shops. I have a lovely winter coat for my Italian greyhound in size S1. He is very very small and this fits perfectly for him. My Whippet iI used redound but they have now retired so I am likely to be using pointy faces to buy them some more…
