5 Signs Your Whippet Needs a New Winter Coat

If you share your life with a Whippet, you already know, they feel the cold in a way that most breeds simply don't. With their short coats and lean frames, a drop in temperature isn't just uncomfortable for them, it can make them genuinely miserable. A good winter coat isn't an accessory for a Whippet, it's a basic necessity.

But coats don't last forever, and not all of them do the job they should. Here are five signs it might be time to find your dog something more suitable.

1. They are still shivering even with a coat on

This one's hard to ignore. If your Whippet is bundled up but still trembling on a walk or huddling into a ball at home, their coat simply isn't keeping them warm enough. Over time, even decent coats lose their insulating power, especially after lots of washing.

A warm coat that's actually working should have a proper fleece lining or insulation, cover the chest and core well, and fit snugly enough that cold air can't creep in around the edges. If your dog is still seeking out warmth despite wearing one, that's your answer.

 2. The fit has gone wrong

Whippets have a very particular shape, that deep chest, narrow waist and elegant curved back, and a coat that doesn't account for that will never sit right. Too loose and it'll twist around or let the wind in. Too tight and it'll restrict how they move.

Watch out for a coat that rides up at the back, rubs behind the front legs, or shifts around during walks. A well-fitted coat should stay in place and move with your dog like it's barely there.

3. It's no longer keeping the weather out

Cold is one thing, but wet and windy is another level entirely. If your Whippet's coat soaks through quickly or does nothing to block the wind, it's not really protecting them anymore.

A coat that's doing its job keeps your dog dry and warm. When those two things are missing, walks become something they dread rather than enjoy, and honestly, who could blame them?

4. It's starting to look worn out

Even the best coats wear over time. The Velcro stops gripping, the seams start to fray, and the lining flattens out. If you pick up the coat and it looks tired, it's probably performing that way, too.

It's worth checking the fastenings, the stitching and the lining every so often. If it's looking rough, it's likely not keeping your dog as warm as it once did.

5. Your Whippet doesn't want to wear it anymore

Whippets are wonderfully expressive, they will let you know when something isn't right. If your dog has started wriggling away when you reach for their coat, or seems tense and unsettled once it's on, something about it isn't comfortable for them.

It might be the fit, the material, or the way it restricts their movement. A coat they love should feel like nothing once it's on, easy to move in, and not pull or rub.

What to look for in a new coat

When you're ready to replace it, these are the things really worth paying attention to:

  • A fit made for sighthounds: not just "small to medium dog" sizing

  • A warm lining: fleece or insulation makes a real difference

  • Weather protection: waterproof or wind-resistant material for proper winter use

  • Secure, adjustable fastenings: so it stays where it should

The right coat genuinely changes how your Whippet experiences winter. Walks become something they are happy to go on, rather than something they endure.
